The Village People of St. John
Easterly trade winds and a volatile sea deposit a potpourri of flotsam and coral along the southernmost edge of St. John. As a result, locals and visitors alike are constantly re-creating a village of coral people often made with netting, coconuts and driftwood. This magical place, Drunk Bay, is one of our island’s best kept secrets so it’s rarely crowded.
Among the coral pirates, rastafarians, Mr. Potato Heads and various four-legged creatures are an abundance of Turks Head and organ pipe cactuses. If you’re into a bit of rock climbing, head to the top for unspoiled views that will make you want to shout, “I’m on top of the world!”
This windswept bay is surrounded by volcanic boulders said to be some of the oldest rock formations on the island. Breaking surf and jagged rocks make it ideal for inspiration and exploration but not for swimming.
How do you get here? The Drunk Bay Trail begins at the south end of Salt Pond Beach. It’s an easy .3 mile hike but be sure to take water and sunscreen as there’s no shelter from the hot sun. Be sure to send us a picture of your masterpiece to share on our Facebook and Instagram pages!
