Vacation to St. John, Repeat

They say there are 3 different types of travelers. Adventurers, Business and Backpackers. They forgot the fourth, Addicts. Margy and her husband, Patrick, are St. John addicts. If you’re a fellow addict, there’s hope for you here.

How many times have you vacationed to St John?

20 plus. I stayed at Virgin Grand Estates in 1988 with my boyfriend, who became my husband in 1991.

What is it that makes you return?

The absolute joy we feel when approaching St. John from the ferry. It’s indescribable. The welcoming warmth of the people. The ease of the island. Our anticipation of seeing old friends we’ve made. No all-inclusives, no high rises, no pressure, no schedules. We have vacationed elsewhere over the years and every single time, our first thought is that we should have stuck with St. John. And that’s the truth. I should probably mention the incredible beaches and that water!

Do you have a favorite beach or hiking trail?

Maho has always been our favorite. Although I can’t think of a beach on St. John that we don’t love. Maho is easy to get to, especially when you are carrying beach chairs and coolers. The water is calm so you can easily just hang out, have a drink and some lunch. We love to pass the time watching the pelicans fish from the hills. You can literally stand waist deep in the water and see schools of fish swim all around you!

What’s your favorite time of year to visit?

We usually go in September which is our anniversary month, and we’ve always experienced the most amazing weather.

Cruz Bay or Coral Bay?

We prefer Cruz Bay. We like being close to the restaurants and shops, and interacting with the locals. We’ve made some great friends on St. John.

If you could only eat at one restaurant during your stay, which would it be?

Only one? There are so many great places to eat on island. Sun Dog Cafe has excellent food. We have also gotten to know the owner of this restaurant. Mike has become a good friend and it’s always great to see a welcoming familiar face. We also love Margarita Phil’s drinks. Especially the grande margarita. Greengos, also has an awesome margarita. My husband makes a b-line for Uncle Joe’s BBQ. The food is delicious and the portions are huge. The Beach Bar is another favorite. Good food and great atmosphere.

What airport do you fly out of and is there an airline you prefer?

BWI (Baltimore/Washington International). Delta always does a great job.

Advice for a first time visitor?

Whatever you’ve packed, take out half of it! You don’t need much. St. John is a very casual island. And of course, bug spray.
