I Just Returned from St. John and Here’s What You Need to Know

So, now you can travel to St. John. But should you? Like many of you, my plans to travel have been repeatedly delayed or cancelled for 2020. We’ve all been monitoring travel advisories and the management of Covid in the territory. Once greenlighted to return, it was game on.

I just returned from 11 glorious days on St. John and here’s what you need to know.

At the airport

At the airport, you will have your temperature checked and you will need to present your negative Covid results as well as travel portal forms. You must be wearing a mask. For faster entry, print forms for each traveler in your party. This process went exceptionally smooth without delay.

Taxi drivers

Taxi drivers were present like normal. If you would rather not be transported in a group, consider hiring one of the many private drivers ahead of time.

Ferries

Ferries were running on a limited schedule and fairly crowded. Masks are required, even when sitting outdoors.

Shops and restaurants

Shops and Restaurants are open, beaches are open, live music has just been re-introduced, and boats are eager to charter. Every resident I encountered was genuinely thrilled to welcome visitors.

Our St. John Villa, Marathon, was sanitized and spotless, and now one of my favorites! You can avoid trips to the grocery store by provisioning ahead.

No mask, no service is enforced at all establishments. If a restaurant takes reservations, make one a day or two in advance. With restrictions on occupancy, they fill up fast. Take out is always a good option too.

How was the overall travel experience? It was easier and more normal than expected. Compared to living stateside in a crowded community, it was refreshing to explore the hiking trails, beaches and underwater world in all its glory far removed from the daily news. Every now and then, I even forgot about the pandemic.

Should you visit? Absolutely, as long as you’re willing to happily comply with the minor restrictions in place to protect our beloved island and its residents. The welcome mat is out!
