There’s no better take away from your island experience than an original piece crafted by a local. These four commendable establishments are worthy of a good long look.
By its own definition, Bajo El Sol Gallery & Art Bar is a hybrid art gallery, bookstore, café, rum and cocktail bar. Located in Mongoose Junction, you’ll find work created by local contemporary artists such as jewelry, ceramics, photography alongside a wide variety of Caribbean products and literature. Enjoy Puerto Rican expresso, wine, craft cocktails, fine chocolates and pastries in addition to the largest selection of aged rums in Cruz Bay. Be sure to check their event calendar for book signings, opportunities to meet the artists, poetry readings and film screenings.
Looking for stunning larger-than-life photographs of all things St. John? Head to the St. John Experience Gallery, also in Mongoose Junction. The purpose of this gem is “to capture the reason customers fall in love with the island and give them something to take home.” The gallery displays images from new angles and perspectives, giving an exciting twist to traditional beach photos. Everyone knows the quaint West Indian cottage on Frank Bay belongs to artist-in-residence Elaine Estern’s Coconut Coast Studio. Her vibrant watercolors are inspired primarily by coral reefs, wildlife and sailing vessels. Her work is sprinkled throughout businesses on St. John, and her famous wall calendars are shipped to thousands around the world each year. Elaine often hosts gallery gatherings on Wednesday evenings for visitors and locals alike. Stop by and ask about her rich history including creating a Christmas ornament for the White House!
It’s impossible to miss the distinctive lighting theme in resorts, shops and villas around the island. These unique ceramics are the work of potter Donald Schnell. His studio also offers handcrafted signage, planters, vases, windchimes, dinnerware and fountains. Donald takes great pride in blending coral sand and recycled glass with raw clay to reproduce the colors of the rocks and water of the Caribbean. No two pieces are alike.
