A 5-Year-Old’s View of St. John

You know that giddy feeling you get the moment you board the ferry to St. John? The one that causes you to smile from the inside out like a kid who just found out it’s going to be a snow day…

Our inner child surfaces as we prepare to play in the world’s coolest sandbox. Perhaps that’s why there’s a growing trend known as kidfluencing, where more parents are allowing their children to choose the family vacation destination than ever before. So, it seems fitting to get a five-year-old’s viewpoint of our magical island.

Meet Maya from North Carolina:

Tell me a bit about yourself. How old are you and where do you live?

My name is Maya and I am five years old. I go to kindergarten. I like to tumble at gymnastics. I have a dog named Winston. He’s nice.

How many times have you been to St John?

One time, but I am coming tomorrow. (Her mother interprets that to mean July 2016)

Where else have you traveled and how is St. John different or special?

Topsail, Holden, Wrightsville. (All North Carolina beaches) St. John is special because you can find stingrays there.

What are your favorite things to do while you’re here?

Swim in the water, seeing turtles and eating smoothies.

Do you have a favorite beach that’s just right for kids?

Francis – there are lots of turtles there, and fish. I saw deer prints on the beach.

What’s your favorite restaurant or type of food on St. John?

Skinny Legs and strawberry smoothies from Colombo’s.

Did you try any new activities or new food while you were here?

Crafts and treasure hunting with Mrs. Leslie (from Kids Night In), and smoothies.

Did you take home any souvenirs?

Jewelry, a book and stuffed donkey.

When you come back to St John, what are you looking forward to the most?

Using my new snorkel and seeing stingrays under the water. I want to pick up sea stars.

What advice do you have for other girls and boys who are going to St John for the first time?

I love the island and want to go for 30 years.

Strawberry smoothies, stingrays and swimming. What’s not to love? Thanks, Maya.
