Day Trippin’ to Jost Van Dyke
Your St. John To Do List would be incomplete without a day trip (or two) to Jost Van Dyke, the “barefoot island.” Only three square miles, this little island is littered with some of the Caribbean’s most famous beach bars.
Amid swaying palm trees and ivory sand you’ll find an impressive variety of beachfront establishments resembling tropical shacks and shanties. Don’t let appearances fool you. Some of the best West Indian roti’s, flying fish sandwiches, lobster quesadillas and conch stew are served up in these watering holes.
There are a half dozen more hideaways tucked away on Jost Van Dyke, however, here’s an insider’s list of must-sees:
Soggy Dollar
Soggy’s claim to fame is the Painkiller — a perfected concoction of premium dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juices, topped with fresh grated Grenadian nutmeg. With no docks on White Bay, you’ll have to swim ashore, hence the name Soggy Dollar. Plop yourself in a hammock and take a nap or sit back and watch dozens of boats anchor along the shoreline from dawn til dusk.
Ivan’s Stress Free Bar
What started out as a wooden shack honor bar has become a popular destination on the eastern end of White Bay. This place is so chill that Kenny Chesney filmed the “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem” video here. Sip on some stress free punch and chat it up with Ivan, who is usually on site to welcome you.
Foxy’s
The most popular bar in Great Harbour is Foxy’s. Foxy is often spotted playing guitar, singing songs and telling jokes in Calypso style. Specialty drinks Sly Fox and Dread Fox are made with his own Firewater Rum, and draft beers are from his microbrewery.
Foxy’s Taboo
Named after Foxy’s dog, Taboo is on the far east end. This is the place to be for a full moon party, complete with a bonfire, pig roast and fire dancer. Taboo has become a hot spot for boaters looking to relax on a covered patio with a killer view.
One Love
Look for four walls and a roof drowning in flotsam and jetsam and you’ll find One Love. A peaceful vibe fills the air as does the sound of reggae. If you’re lucky, owner Seddy will blow your mind with his magic tricks. Cool off with their specialty, the Bushwacker, a chocolate shake with a kick.
Corsairs
The only place you’ll find Wench or VooDoo Juice is at pirate-themed Corsairs, located on the Great Harbour side of Jost. Though it lacks the attention of it’s White Bay neighbors, Corsairs is worth a visit. Big on personality, owner Vinnie likes to say it’s a great place for a bachelor party, divorce party, pity party or other special occasion.
