Barbecue Lovers Unite!
Just mention barbecue and everyone has an opinion, and we’re sure you’ll find three new favorites right here on St. John. As you walk through town, you can’t miss the sweet smokin’ smell lingering in the air. Follow your nose to find these Cruz Bay establishments, each of which offers their own unique flair from Texas to Caribbean-style barbecue.
Uncle Joe’s World Famous BBQ
Where: Across the street from the post office
Good to know: Cash only, locally thought to have the edge with ribs
You might just walk right by this roadside eatery without realizing a few open-air tables are Uncle Joe’s dining room. Juicy ribs and chicken are served with pasta salad, an ear of corn, rice and beans, or coleslaw. Conch fritters are a house specialty when in season. Caribbean-style barbecue sauce (sweet and spicy) simmers on an open grill which is often manned by Uncle Joe himself.
Candi’s Delights Barbecue
Where: Bottom of the hill near The Marketplace
Good to know: Limited parking in an industrial lot, locally thought to have the edge with chicken
When you find a blue van attached to a makeshift dock in a parking lot, you’ve found Candi’s. What it lacks in atmosphere is made up for in generous portions. Barbecued ribs, steak, shrimp, fish and jerk chicken are her specialties, served with your choice of mac and cheese, coleslaw, rice and peas, potato salad, corn or fried plantains. Candi’s is the official home of “de come back sauce.” Give it a try and see if you come back.
Barefoot Cowboy Lounge
Located: In the Lumberyard Complex
Good to know: Live music and All-U-Can Eat Tuesdays and Thursdays for $20
“Come getcha sum” Texas-style smoked brisket and pork, pulled pork, sausage and chicken prepared by owner Wayne Campbell. This is a great place to try something new like pineapple-jalapeno tequila, pulled pork Frito pie served right in the bag, and rum and vodka snow cones. Entertain yourself with a killer view of the harbor, foosball, darts, pool and flatscreen TVs.
